Zork Green Tip 32 - Raiders of the Lost Closet

Earthlings, we discovered a secret treasure for staying in fashion while being green. No need to shop till you drop this year. The secret treasures we speak of lie in your own closet.

We observed some intelligent, eco-friendly and well-dressed humans, not shopping, but recycling their old clothing. They were digging deep into their own closets and finding clothing and shoes they have not worn for years. Some of these clothes are back in style. What treasures they have become now.

Recycle clothing to save dollars.

And because your planet is in recession, and we hope not too deep of a recession, frugality has become the fashion statement this year. We would not be surprised to see fashion models walking down the runway wearing their old clothing.

Fashion is dead. Green frugality is in.

Besides, what is more fashionable? Wearing new clothing or contributing to the CO2 levels in the Earth's atmosphere? Wearing new clothing or having a foreclosure sign in your yard? Meera and I think it is much cooler to wear old clothes.

Make it fun, Earthling! Watch Indiana Jones films to motivate yourself to raid your closet. You and your family can dress up like Indiana Jones and act out the part.

Make your old clothing new again. Mix and match old items to create new outfits. Tailor your old clothing to update the style.

Get the young humans involved. Recycle their toys. Simply take some of their old toys from deep in their closets and re-package them into some boxes you saved over the year and present it to them right now. What is the occasion? Tell them they are getting presents because you are declaring this year the “Year of Green Frugality.” Most of the children will not realize it is their old toys.

Ask your neighbors to raid each other’s closets. Make sure you do not have any sexy, embarrassing items lying around in your closet to avoid extreme embarrassment.

Beware. We are currently working on the next sequel to Indiana Jones. It will be called Raiders of the Lost Closet. What fun it will be to act side by side with Harrison Ford. We hope Mr. Ford does not demand too much money for his part.

Green frugality is in.

Comment by james brennan on January 9, 2009 at 12:01pm: it is said that if you keep some thing long enough, it will come back into fashion again! the the same is true with the world, what goes around, comes around? i guess i haven't fallen low enough yet, to begin my return? times are hard all over & some good people are getting hurt for having nice things, even though they are very old? i have an old truck that i have repaired many times, it shakes, rattles & rolls past the the new BMW, broken down on the shoulder,blowing steam out from under the hood, the man 's jaw drops as i go by. my wife calls it the "champ" it gets us where we must go! i would much rather have a car that does not pollute the planet, but "WE THE PEOPLE"were never given the choice? WE THE PEOPLE number at 136 now, more will come! try out i think, what one person needs, could be what another does not want anymore? happy bargain hunting!

Comment by JedanKitty on January 8, 2009 at 11:43am: Hey, and if you live in a nice apartment or condo you can often find nice furniture or electronics sitting outside the dumpster. i'd never go dumpster diving, but when something is OUTSIDE the dumpster it's a signal the person is giving the perfectly good item away to whoever wants for needs it. Funny, the other day I was on my way to go purchase a new computer keyboard and when I went to empty my trash there was a perfectly good keyboard sitting by the dumpster. I saved money and gas!

Comment by Rebecca on January 8, 2009 at 8:53am: Well dearest Zork, there are those of us who don't have spare clothes for some reason or another but when we or the growing children need clothing we ALWAYS go to garage sales, or Goodwill or Salvation Army!!! It is so much fun to get some really nice stuff for really cheap prices!! Instead of buying chemical-laden clothing made by SLAVE-LABOR from places like China, we get good stuff (watch Wal-Mart: The High Price of Low Cost) cheap.
One step further...most of the house stuff that we really need we get used, we just moved and so need some things for the house, we NEVER buy new if there's any possibility of buying used, even if we have to wait a few weeks for what we "need"!! Right now it's a washing machine, we killed ours somehow. Lots of people throw out perfectly good stuff cause it's the wrong color or some such ridiculous thing. Also check out Freecycle and Craig's List for FREE and low-cost stuff, save the planet...recycle everything!
